    OLIGNEY FAMILY (96)
Thanks to other cousins, I have learned that the name OLIGNEY used to be spelled OLIGNY while our ancestors were in France and Canada. It was changed around the time of my grandfather\'s generation. There are some other variations of the name found in the United States, such as OLINGY, OLENA, and OLNY among others.

The earliest OLIGNY found in our line is Jean OLIGNY who was born about 1700 in Tuelle France. His son, Jean-Baptiste I, moved to Canada sometime between his birth in about 1723 and the birth of his son, Joseph OLIGNY I in Chambly, Quebec in 1767. I\'m not sure when this OLIGNY family started venturing into America, but my line, starting with Noe OLIGNY, came sometime after 1878. Noe and his family settled in WI where his grandson, my grandfather, Joseph Lyle (Lyle), was born in 1898.

The story is that Lyle was a sailor and somehow ended up in Baltimore MD, where he met and married my Grandmother Helen FUKA. They had five children Ruth, Edward, James, Helen and Lyle Anthony. Most of the children stayed in MD with the exception of my father, James, and his brother, Edward. They both lived most of their adult lives in Las Cruces, NM, where they are buried.

Uncle Edward served in the Army during WWII engaging in battles in Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. After WWII he was stationed in Japan where he met a Japanese woman and had a child with her. I seem to remember hearing that they were married, but I can\'t confirm that as she was not allowed to come back to America with Edward. His son\'s name is Jimya (Jimmy) NAMBA. Jimya's daughter, Kumiko NAMBA, contacted me several years ago.
I lost contact with her in around 2010. My father, James, and his brother, Lyle, were also in the service during WWII.

I have found out from an obit in the Stevens Point Daily Journal for my grandfather, Joseph Lyle OLIGNEY, that he was in the US Navy for six years including the WWI period. I have not been able to find any military records for him yet.

  • Notes
    • The Enoch Pratt Free Library, Periodicals Department, Baltimore MD has this obit for Lyle:

"OLIGNEY - On February 13, 1938, LYLE, beloved husband of Helen Oligney.
Funeral from his late residence, 516 North Chapel street, on Wednesday morning at 8:15. High Mass at St. Wenceslaus' Church at 9 o'clock. Interment in Holy Redeemer Cemetery".

According to City Of Baltimore Death Certificate, Lyle died of TB.

The 1930 Baltimore City MD Census has Lyle, his wife Helen and children Ruth, Edward, James, Helen and Lyle Junior living with Helen's father Frank FUKA and his wife Sofia.

Lyle's obit in the Stevens Point Daily Journal says the he was in the US Navy for six years, including the World War (WWI) period.
