    VASQUEZ Family (6)
The VASQUEZ family are long-time residents of Monterey, going back to every census I can find. I believe that they are descended from a soldier from one of the Spanish conquests. I hope to substantiate that. Perhaps the most widely known VASQUEZ is the infamous California bandido, Tiburcio VASQUEZ, for whom the Vasquez Rocks in Southern California are named, home of many hundreds of movie westerns and TV shows to include Star Trek. But I digress. Tiburcio is not in my direct line, but he may be a relative somewhere down the line.

My great grandfather is Esperidion VASQUEZ, a horseman who loved the ranches and the golden hills of the Gabilan mountains between Salinas and Monterey. He married the widow of Joseph ANDRIETTA, Maria Josefa del Refugio ARTELLAN, who was the daughter of Frenchman Pierre ARTELLAN and Maria Antonia Dominga GARCIA. “Chavate”, as Esperidion was called, and Josefa had 9 children, of which Maria Rafaella was my great grandmother. It was she who married John PATE.
